Eligibility Criteria

All patients will be screened using the eligibility criteria detailed below:

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patient is aged 16 years or over

  • Patient has symptomatic BTOA

  • The treating clinician considers the patient would benefit from surgical intervention

  • Patient is able to provide consent to a surgical procedure 

  • Patient is suitable for both types of surgery (trapeziectomy and CMCJR)

Exclusion
Criteria:

  • Patient has inflammatory arthritis

  • Patient currently has or has had an infection around the base of the thumb 

  • Patient has had previous surgery on the affected CMCJ

  • Patient has a comorbidity which precludes them form undergoing surgical intervention
